.long Weekend

via this great Tumblr
This weekend marks the start of summer. I don't think I ever appreciated Memorial Day enough before I was working. Now, I look forward to a long weekend for, well, weeks ahead of time! I can't wait. Oh, and if you're looking for the perfect summer playlist, look no further! Refinery29 has released an incredible one that you can find AND download for free, here!

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

.happy fleet Week

Found here
It's.... wait for it... FLEET WEEK! Fleet Week in NYC started on Wednesday. I celebrated it by drinking on a boat. (Appropriate, right?)

In all seriousness though, Fleet Week is intended to showcase the talents our Navy and Marine Corps. There are ship tours in the harbor, parades, etc. I'm so happy this occurs every year. First, I get to drool over the men in uniform. But more importantly, our military servicemen and women deserve this recognition. I am so impressed by their dedication. So, in addition to those drinks I bought for a few Marines on Wednesday, I'm sending out a humble "thank you!" to all the men and women who serve. Thank you for being heroes.

So, in honor of Fleet Week, a few ocean-themed things that I love:

Ever since I moved to New York City last year (happy days!!), I've found my design style slowly changing. I think it's the city vibe and all the crazy people I see, but I'm currently very into bold colors, patterns, and textures.

I recently took the plunge into patterns with gray, zebra-striped curtains. (I know. They sound like they belong in a sixteen-year-old's bedroom, but I promise they're divine and lovely. Pictures to come.)

I'm trying to update my bedroom with some summer colors and patterns -- see my inspiration below!

.go make This

Recipe from NYTimes

This was my dinner last Friday night. And I don't regret a single, freaking bite of it.

I, ladies (and gentleman?), am a terrible cook. I screw up eggs. EGGS! However, this chocolate cake was amazing and easy enough that even I couldn't mess it up.

I think this chocolate cake and I now have a standing, weekly date. That's ok. It's not like it's bikini season or anything, right?

Shit.

.the Illusionist

Mere months ago, the world "lucite" sparked thoughts of 6" stripper heels with a dollar slot in them. (Where did I even get that mental image from? A movie? I hope so.)

Anyway, I've noticed that lucite and acrylic furniture has been quietly edging its way into interior design recently. You would think it would be hideously tacky -- indeed, I thought that as well. However, somehow this see-through stuff is modern, unexpected, and luxe.

Well, consider me officially on the lucite bandwagon. Yep. Definitely on this clear, hard, plastic, oh-so-chic bandwagon.

P.S. As I was walking around the UES with my mom this weekend (after a failed attempt to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met because of AN HOUR LONG LINE, but I'm not bitter), I stumbled upon the Jonathan Adler store, or heaven, as I affectionately call it.

Surprise surprise, I almost bought that acrylic tray, but paused at the $98 price tag. However, I just found a similar one for half the price at CB2.. so I figure I can DIY it with some wallpaper.

Maybe I'll post about that project. Maybe..
